세계랭킹 1위였던 샤라포바의 추락이 멈추지 않고있다. 16일(이하 한국시각) 발표된 여자테니스 세계랭킹에서 샤라포바는 지난주에 비해 한계단 추락한 5위를 마크했다. 문제는 앞으로 샤라포바의 랭킹 추락 가능성이 상당이 높다는 점이다.
샤라포바가 지난해 우승했던 두 개의 정상급 대회에 출전신고를 하지못하게 된 것이다.
샤라포바는 오는 14일과 22일에 각각 열릴 예정인 취리히 오픈(총상금 134만달러)과 제너럴리 오픈(총상금 60만달러)에 부상으로 출전을 포기한다고 14일 밝혔다.
랭킹 포인트 시스템에 의해 지난해 우승포인트는 소멸되기 때문에 샤라포바가 두 개의 대회에 참가하지 않아 잃게되는 포인트는 총 495점(취리히오픈 300점, 제너럴리 오픈195점)이다. 두 대회가 모두 끝나는 11월 첫 주에 발표될 랭킹에서 샤라포바는 세계랭킹 5위인 15일자의 포인트 3161점에서 495점이 빠진 2666점이 되며, 이 포인트는 8-9위권의 랭킹 포인트이다. 샤라포바의 추락은 어느정도 예견된 것이었다.

샤라포바를 괴롭히는 두 개의 아킬레스건이 있다. 하나는 특정 선수 그룹에 승률이 극히 낮았다는 것이다. 여자테니스연맹 (Women's Tennis Association, WTA) 의 흥행카드 마리아 샤라포바가 특정그룹의 선수를 만났을 때 나타나는 승률이다. 아밀레 모레스모(프랑스, 13위), 세레나 윌리엄스(미국,6위), 쥐스틴 에넹(벨기에,1위)이 샤라포바를 주눅들게 만드는 그 저격수들이다. 샤라포바는 이들과의 대결에서 5승13패, 승률27%을 기록하고 있다.

특히 모레스모에게는 1승4패의 참담한 기록을 보유하고 있다. '그녀가 세계랭킹 1, 2위에 올랐던 것이 잘못되지 않았을까' 하는 생각이 들 정도로 낮은 승률이다.
둘째는 계속되는 부상이다. 연초에는 등부상과 어깨부상으로 두 달여의 공백을 가지면서 이렇다할 성적을 내지못하였고, 랭킹관리에 중요한 시점인 10월에 다시 부상으로 투어포기를 선언하며 사실상 올해를 접어야만 하는 처지가 되었다.
부상으로 인한 공백은 선수에게 연습부족과 경기력 저하의 빌미를 제공한다. 샤라포바가 다시 한번 챔피언의 자리에 오르기위해 필요한 것은 강한 웨이트 트레이닝으로 파워를 갖추는 것이다. 위에 언급한 저격수들이나 힘을 앞세워 여자 투어를 평정하고 있는 동구권 출신 선수들에게 밀리지 않으려면 스태미너와 강한 파워가 필요하다.
샤라포바는 쿠르니코바가 아니다!
샤라포바는 미모를 앞세운 잦은 외도로 테니스계를 떠난 안나 쿠르니코바가 비교되는 것을 극도로 싫어한다. 쿠르니코바처럼은 되지 않을거라고 여러 차례 언급한 적이 있다. 샤라포바가 부상과 몇몇 기술적인 부분에서 완성도를 높인다면 언제든지 예전의 명성을 찾을수 있을 것으로 예상된다. 테니스에 대한 열정이 아직 살아있기 때문이다.
2004년 윔블던 결승에서 윌리암스를 이기고 세계 테니스 팬들앞에 혜성처럼 나타난 샤라포바에게 2007년은 시련의 계절이 되고 있다. 투어 타이틀을 단 하나(8월 샌디에고)밖에 획득하지 못하고 부상과 패배의 늪에서 빠져나오지 못하고 있기 때문이다.
샤라포바가 시련을 이겨내고 챔피언의 자리에 다시 오를 것인지 내리막길에서 2인자의 자리를 지킬 것인지 혹은 조용히 사라질 것인지 20살의 샤라포바가 실력으로 검증해야 할 무거운 숙제이다.
2001년 4월 19일, 만14세 생일에 맞춰 프로에 데뷔한 샤라포바는 2002년 미국 콜럼버스에서 열린 챌린저 대회에서 첫 승을 장식했다. 올해로 만 20세를 맞으며 소녀에서 숙녀로 변신한 그녀가 어려움을 극복하고 정상에 다시설 수 있을지 세계 테니스 팬들의 이목이 집중되고 있다.
