첫날 이어 마지막 날도 김 위원장과 꼿꼿이 악수
(서울=연합뉴스) 이귀원 기자 =`2007 남북정상회담' 공식수행원 자격으로 방북한 김장수 국방장관이 회담내내 화제가 되고 있다.
김 장관은 방북 첫날인 지난 2일 평양시내 4.25 문화회관 광장에서 열린 공식환영식에서 김정일 위원장과 악수를 나누면서 꼿꼿한 자세를 유지해 눈길을 끌었다.
허리나 머리를 약간 숙이면서 악수를 나눈 대부분의 남측 수행원들과 달리 김 장관은 고개를 거의 숙이지 않고 한쪽 손만 내밀어 꼿꼿이 선 상태에서 악수를 한 것이다.
특히 김 장관이 김 위원장에 비해 키가 큰 데다 그에 바로 앞서 허리와 고개를 숙이며 김 위원장의 오른 쪽 손을 두 손으로 감싸쥐고 깎듯이 인사한 김만복 국정원장과 대조를 이뤄 그의 인사법은 단연 화제가 됐다.
김 장관의 이 같은 꼿꼿한 모습은 회담 마지막날인 4일에도 재연됐다.
평양시내 백화원 영빈관에서 노 대통령과 정상회담 결과물인 `남북관계 발전과 평화번영을 위한 선언'에 서명한 후 김 위원장이 남측 인사들과 악수를 하는 과정에서 같은 장면이 TV 카메라에 잡힌 것이다.
김 장관의 이 같은 모습은 서울 소공동 롯데호텔에 마련된 프레스센터에서 취재진들 사이에서도 화제가 됐다.
이에 대해 국방부 당국자는 "특별한 정치적 의미가 있는 것이 아니라 군에 오랫동안 몸담으면서 꼿꼿하게 악수를 나누는 것이 몸에 밴 것"이라고 말했다. 지난해 말 정무직인 국방장관으로 취임했지만 40여 년간 군생활을 통해 몸에 밴 악수 자세가 김 위원장과의 악수에서 그대로 나왔다는 것이다.
실제 김 장관는 군 야전교범에 나와있는 `경례 및 예절' 규정대로 김 위원장과 악수를 나눴다.
야전교범에는 "허리를 굽히거나 고개를 숙이거나, 몸을 흔들어 아첨하거나 비굴해 보이는 듯한 저자세 악수방법을 삼가야 한다"고 돼있다.
또 "손은 약간 힘을 주어 가볍고 잡고 상대방의 눈을 마주보며 자연스럽게 교환해야 하며, 손을 너무 흔들거나 두 손을 쥐는 것은 실례가 된다"고 규정하고 있다.
야전교범을 그대로 실천한 셈이다.
그러나 일각에서는 김 장관의 악수 자세가 몸에 밴 것도 있지만 우리 군의 사기도 고려하지 않았겠느냐는 관측도 나온다. 군을 책임지는 국방장관으로서 당당한 모습을 보여주고 싶었던 게 아니냐는 분석이다.
김 장관의 정상회담 수행은 회담 전부터 서해 북방한계선(NLL) 재설정 논란과 맞물려 주목을 받았었다. NLL은 영토개념이라고 분명히 밝힌 김 장관이 방북을 해서는 안된다는 의견도 있었다.
그러나 이번 정상회담 합의문에는 NLL 문제에 대한 직접적은 언급이 빠졌다. 다만 서해 공동어로를 포함한 서해평화협력지대 조성과 제2차 국방장관회담 11월 개최 등이 합의됐다.
김 장관은 노 대통령과 김 위원장 간의 2차에 걸친 정상회담에는 배석하지 않았지만 합의문 도출과정에서 군사분야에 대해 상당한 조언을 했을 것으로 보인다.
