(서울=연합뉴스) 장현구 기자 = 이형택(세계랭킹 47위.삼성증권)이 총상금 171억원이 걸린 시즌 첫 메이저대회 호주오픈에서 단식 2회전에 진출했다.
이형택은 15일 호주 멜버른 파크 마거릿 코트 아레나에서 벌어진 1회전에서 강서브를 앞세운 홈코트의 크리스 구치오니(91위)를 1시간 55분 만에 3-0(7-6 < 8-6 > 6-3 6-4)으로 완파하고 64강이 겨루는 2회전에 올랐다.
이달 첫 주 카타르오픈과 지난주 하이네켄 오픈에서 오른쪽 무릎 통증 탓에 각각 2회전, 1회전에서 탈락했던 이형택은 구치오니에게 고전하리라던 당초 예상을 깨고 안정된 플레이로 완승을 일구며 자신감을 회복했다.
이 대회에 7번째 출전한 이형택이 2회전에 오른 것은 2003년 이후 5년 만이다.
2001년과 2004년부터 지난해까지 4년 연속 1회전에서 고배를 마셨지만 그는 지난해 윔블던 3회전과 US오픈 16강 진출을 이룬 상승세로 큰 경기에 강한 면모를 이어갔다.
구치오니는 키가 2m에 달하는 거구인데다 왼손잡이여서 이형택이 상대하기에 까다로운 조건을 모두 갖췄다. 그러나 서브만 강했을 뿐 기술에서 허점을 드러내며 이형택의 노련미를 극복하지 못했다.
이형택은 최고 215㎞짜리 광서브를 뿜어낸 구치오니에게 서브에이스 16개를 내줬지만 최고 시속 197㎞ 서브로 자신도 에이스를 7개나 따내며 응수했다.
1세트에서 서브 에이스 3-12의 절대 열세 속에서도 자신의 서브 게임을 잘 지켜가며 타이브레이크에 돌입한 이형택은 3-6으로 뒤졌으나 이후 5점을 연속으로 따내는 괴력을 발휘하며 1세트를 가져왔다.
고비를 넘긴 이형택은 여세를 몰아 2세트에서는 도리어 서브 에이스에서 3-1로 앞서며 6-3으로 가볍게 따낸 뒤 3세트에서도 첫 두 게임을 잡아 유리하게 게임을 풀어간 끝에 쉽게 이겼다.
이형택은 첫 서브 득점률과 네트 근접 공격에서 각각 85%, 81%의 높은 성공률을 기록했다. 2004년 삼성증권챌린저대회에서 2-0(7-5 6-2)으로 승리한 것을 합쳐 이형택은 구치오니에게 2전 전승을 달렸다.
64강 진출로 이형택은 랭킹 유지에 필요한 투어 포인트 35점과 상금 2만7천207달러를 확보했다. 그는 페르난도 곤살레스(7위.칠레)-콘스탄티노스 에코노미디스(142위.그리스) 승자와 2회전에서 격돌한다.
