그렇게 어려운 환경에서 운동을 했음에도,
비뚤어지지 않고 항상 긍정적인 자세로 열심히 최선을 다해서 최고의 자리에 오른 그는
분명 다른 이들에게 귀감이 되는 사람임에 틀림없다.
특히나 그의 어린시절과 같이 어려운 환경에서 운동하고 있는 아이들에게는 더더욱 그러할 것이다.
히딩크한테 찍히게 된 하프라인까지 끌고 나온 그 사건만 아니었더라면,
그는 2002, 2006년 주전 골키퍼를 계속해서 하고 있었을 것이고,
어쩌면 더 큰 무대에서 활약할 수 있었을지도 모른다.
나는 아직도 그가 이운재보다 못한 골키퍼라고 생각하지 않는다.
2006년에 명단에서 탈락한 것은 분명 다른 실력 외적인 요인이 포함되어 있다고 생각한다.
안정환이 대표팀에서 외면당하고 있는 것도,
특정 대학 출신이 아니라서 그렇다는 말도 공공연하게 나도는 소문 아닌가..
암튼..이 기사를 보고 다시 한 번 김병지에 대해서 호감을 가지게 되었더라는..
어려웠던 상황을 겪어본 사람만이 그 어려움을 안다..
후배에게 건넨 따뜻한 그 한마디가 그 후배의 일생을 바꿀 수도 있을 것이다..

[마이데일리 = 조건호 기자] 한 팀에서 '제3의 골키퍼'라는 자리는 무척 슬픈 위치이다. 주전 골키퍼가 상대의 무릎에 찍혀 실신하고 그 다음 골키퍼는 기절해서 실려나가야 경기에 나설 수 있는 것이 마지막 골키퍼의 운명이다.
지난 16일 프로 데뷔전을 치른 대전의 유재훈은 '제3의 골키퍼'였다. 주전 최은성이 부상으로 빠지고 '제2의 골키퍼' 양동원이 대표팀에 소집되자 그에게도 기회가 찾아왔다. 축구장은 우리의 인생과 비슷하다. 언제 어디서 어떤 일이 생겨날지 전혀 알 수 없는 것이 그라운드의 모습이다.
경기 초반 쏟아지는 빗줄기와 함께 불안한 모습을 보이던 유재훈은 시간이 갈수록 안정감을 찾아가며 몇 번의 선방도 해냈다. 최종 스코어는 0-1 대전의 패배. 하지만 그 동안 한 경기도 뛰지 못했던 후보 골키퍼의 데뷔전 치고는 그리 나쁘지 않은 시합이었다.
경기를 보면서 '오늘은 유재훈이라는 선수와 꼭 이야기를 해야지'라고 생각하고 있던 필자는 주심의 종료 휘슬과 함께 쏜살같이 경기장으로 내려갔다. 아예 대전의 골문 앞까지 다가선 나는 팬들에게 인사하는 대전 선수들의 틈으로가 유재훈에게 말을 걸었다.
" 유재훈 선수 잠깐 이야기 좀... " 하지만 말을 더 이을 수는 없었다. 팬들에게 인사를 마친 유재훈은 북받쳐 오르는 감정에 뜨거운 눈물을 흘리고 있었다. 그를 잠시 내버려 두기로 하고 옆에서 나란히 걸으면서 함께 그라운드를 빠져 나왔다.
눈물을 훔치고 감정을 추스른 유재훈은 차분히 인터뷰에 응했다. 그는 자신 때문에 팀이 졌다며 자책하는 모습을 보이기도 했지만 앞으로의 경쟁을 통해 그라운드에 나서고 싶은 마음도 숨기지 않았다.
필자는 그런 그에게 이렇게 말해줬다. " 축구장에서는 진짜 언제 어떤 일이 벌어질지 모르잖아요. 끝까지 용기를 잃지 마시고요. 앞으로 행운을 빌게요 "
그로부터 잠시 뒤. 데닐손의 페널티킥을 막아내 유재훈에게 패배를 안긴 골키퍼가 우리 쪽을 향해 걸어오고 있었다. 16년간 K리그 446경기를 소화한 'K리그의 전설' 김병지였다. 리그 최고의 선수이자 월드컵 출전도 경험한 베테랑과 데뷔전에서 패배한 제3의 골키퍼가 마주치는 순간이었다.
한 분야에서 최고의 위치에 오른 남자 김병지. 하지만 그에게서 상대를 내려보는 거만함이나 거들먹거림은 전혀 찾아 볼 수 없었다. 환하게 웃음을 지으며 유재훈에게 다가온 김병지는 자상한 목소리로 한 마디를 건넸다.
" 너 잘하더라 야… "
그 자리에 있던 유재훈과 기자들, 심지어는 경호원들까지 그런 김병지를 멍하니 쳐다봤다. 김병지의 목소리는 온화함이 스며있었고 그가 지어 보인 웃음에는 백만 불 아니 수천 만 불과도 비교할 수 없는 따뜻함이 묻어났다.
어떤 영화보다도 감동적이고 아름다운 순간이었다. 진심으로 유재훈이 잘했다고 생각해서 그렇게 이야기했을 수도 있고 데뷔전을 치른 어린 후배에게 용기를 북돋아 주고 싶었을 수도 있다. 김병지가 어떤 의도로 그렇게 말했는지는 중요치 않다. 그가 던진 한마디는 데뷔전을 치른 유재훈에게 너무나도 커다란 힘이 됐을 것이 분명했다.
어느 신인 소설가에게 이문열이나 김훈 선생이 " 자네 글 잘 쓰더군 " 이라고 말했다면 어땠을까. 아마 그 소설가는 죽는 날까지 그 순간을 잊지 못하고 수 없이 그 장면을 떠올릴 것이다.
더 이상 오를 곳이 없는 위치에 서있지만 자신보다 못한 처지에 있는 누군가를 잊지 않고 칭찬의 한 마디를 건네줄 수 있는 남자 김병지. 남을 배려할 줄 아는 훌륭한 인격체이자 최고의 프로페셔널이었다.
'제3의 골키퍼' 유재훈의 미래가 어찌될지는 아무도 모른다. 이번 데뷔전을 계기로 경기에 자주 나서게 될 수도 있지만, 또 다른 골키퍼 양동원에게 밀릴 수도 있고 부상 중인 최은성이 돌아오고 나면 아예 출전 선수 명단에서 빠지는 날이 더 많아 질지도 모른다.
하지만 유재훈의 미래가 어떻게 되건 간에, 김병지가 건넨 따뜻한 한 마디는 그의 가슴 속에 오래도록 남아 힘을 북돋아 줄 것이 틀림없다.
